We all know that life can get pretty rough, things sometimes seem to come from all angles to throw you off your tracks and when that happens you need to draw on the very core of yourself to make it through. So, as yourself… what’s your belief, cause or purpose? Why is it you do what you do?
Many musicians don’t understand their why…. Yes, it takes time to consider and understand this principle, however, when you do your communication will improve massively.
Let’s take a usual communication from a musician, this might be a post when a track is released. This is a post from a band in Ireland, it’s fairly typical and very matter of fact.

Let’s imagine this from a different perspective, for this example let’s say that the musician’s ‘why’ was that he feels that music helps during a time of depression, he had it and music lifted his spirits.
This is how it would read:
“Today, after 13 months of creation, hard-work, dedication and some dark-times we have released our album. These songs are a collection of works that have lifted our spirits in times when it felt that life was against us.
It has been an incredible journey creating this collection of songs. We have listed the tracks to help you go from a low mood to feeling better and ready again to face the world and get out there. Let it be your soundtrack to a healthy mind. Get your happy face on here: link”
How much better is that? it’s directly communicating why the music was created and released. If you take into account how to talk to different personality types, check out the ink for the free course in the description, then you’ll be unstoppable in your online communications
People get behind bands who know who they are and align themselves to you. If you’re looking for long-term engagement then putting more of yourself out there is really in your favour, but you have to know why, how and what you’re putting out there.
decciBels’ why is this:
“I have seen so many incredible bands, with some amazing music and musicianship not get anywhere near the credit and admiration that they deserve and it always goes the same way…. Break-up. It’s gut wrenching to me to see that happen, I know what has gone into crafting those songs, rehearsing long hours, playing to empty rooms just to go nowhere.
The bands never promoted themselves properly, so that’s why I have studied Digital Marketing, funnels, advertising, social media, psychology, copywriting, video production and a hell of a lot more just to create a system for musicians to follow.
THAT’s MY WHY!
And that’s what keeps me coming back to the computer, to the camera, to the books and University day after day, even when half the globe is in lockdown and my family need my attention, to make sure this gets out there.”
The power of why is never to be under-estimated, when you know what yours is it’ll come across in your posts and videos, people will connect to it, because that’s why people connect, they might not even know it, but you will.
I have also included a phone screen, for you to download, to hack your subconscious, it’ll help your ‘Why’ to suddenly pop into your head, don’t worry, we’ll be getting into mind-set & why it works in later posts.
You can watch our new series, The Papa RUA Experiment, where in this episode we’re discussing Darraghs’ why and how he has been thinking about it.
